HACKED CIRCUIT
ABOUT
Multiple layers of fabrication and imposition are laid bare by this fluidly choreographed, single-shot embodiment of control. While portraying sound artists at work, typically invisible support mechanisms of filmmaking are exposed, as are governmental violations of individual privacy. Sonic surveillance meets the black art of foley.
Deborah Stratman makes work that investigates power, control and belief, exploring how places, ideas, and society are intertwined. Recent projects have addressed freedom, surveillance, sinkholes, comets, exodus and faith, and all her works have a deep allegiance to sound. She has exhibited internationally at venues including MoMA NY, Centre Pompidou, Hammer LA, Whitney Biennial, Austrian Film Museum and festivals including Berlinale, Viennale, CPH/DOX, Full Frame, Rotterdam, Ann Arbor, Oberhausen, Punto de Vista, Cinema du Reel and TIFF. Stratman is the recipient of Fulbright, Guggenheim and United States Artists fellowships, a Creative Capital grant and an Alpert Award. She teaches at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She lives in Chicago where she teaches at the University of Illinois.
