Spirits and Rocks: an Azorean Myth [Espíritos e Rochas: um Mito Açoriano]

On a volcanic island, inhabitants are caught in an unending cycle: the threat of impending eruptions and the burden of past traumas loom over them. Some draw upon myth and religious beliefs to interpret their precarious situation; others demonstrate resilience.
Aylin Gökmen is a Swiss-Turkish artist, producer, and activist. She holds a B.A. in Arts from Lausanne University and an M.A. in Documentary Filmmaking from the DocNomads program. Her films combine documentary and fictional approaches, often revolving around themes of memory, imagination and landscape. Her graduation film SPIRITS AND ROCKS: AN AZOREAN MYTH had its World Premiere at Locarno and went on to screen internationally in over 60 festivals including Sundance and Telluride. Aylin is also a member of the Executive Committee of SWAN (Swiss Women’s Audiovisual Network) and a curator for Docs in Orbit, a transnational podcast that supports independent documentary filmmakers.
