ABOUT

Waponahkik (the people of the dawn land) bring gratitude to the sun where it first looks our way. Song and stories invite us to accept the new day and put behind us any harm done the day before. Featuring Passamaquoddy citizens Christopher Newell, Roger Paul, and Lauren Stevens; and Yo-Yo Ma.

Tracy Rector is a multiethnic filmmaker, curator, community organizer. She brings two decades of experience as a community organizer, educator, filmmaker, film programmer, and arts curator. Her work has been featured on Independent Lens, National Geographic, Cannes Film Festival, ImagineNative, Toronto International Film Festival, and the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. In addition, Tracy is the co-founder of the nonprofits Longhouse Media and Indigenous Showcase and recently completed 8 years as a Seattle Arts Commissioner. She is the Managing Director of Storytelling at Nia Tero.

Weckuwapok was made by a collective of storytellers with a shared affinity for all beings and uplifting Indigenous voices. We are 8 people creating story together. We are Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Wolastoqey, Cherokee, Walla Walla / Northern Cheyenne, multicultural, and settler. Supporting us is a marvelous and diverse team including educators, program managers, advisers, editors, artists, and more who collectively make up the Reciprocity Project team. Our names are (alphabetically): Jacob Bearchum, Taylor Hensel, Adam Mazo, Chris Newell, Roger Paul, Kavita Pillay, Tracy Rector, and Lauren Stevens.

Adam Mazo is an Emmy® award-winning filmmaker and the director of the Upstander Project. He co-founded the Upstander Project with Mishy Lesser in 2009. He is the co-director and producer of the Emmy® award-winning feature-length film, Dawnland (Independent Lens, Woods Hole Jury Award for Best Documentary 2018), First Light (Camden International Film Festival 2016) and Dear Georgina (Camden International Film Festival 2019). Adam directed and produced Coexist (WORLD Channel, Africa Movie Academy Award Nominee 2014), and he is currently co-directing and producing the upcoming short Bounty. His films have been broadcast on domestic and international television, programmed at film festivals and international conferences, and screened at universities, middle and high schools, where they are also often used in curricula. He is originally from Minnesota, graduated from the University of Florida, and now lives with his wife and sons in the territory of the Massachusett people, aka Boston.
