ABOUT

This experiential, atmospheric film drops viewers in amongst the running herds of contemporary Lapland. Leaving the language barrier partially intact means one must read images, sounds and transmissions to become part of the story. Once immersed, one sees through the eyes of the hunters, who are completely one with their surroundings. Using vivid imagery, colors and precise, evocative sound design, the filmmakers transform the surprising into the familiar. Like the hunters, one experiences both the modern world and a traditional, land-based way of life. In the space between these realms, the everyday simply exists, day after day, year after year. - Sarah Ruddy

Multi-disciplinary artist Jessica Oreck often says that she collects the invisible.  Not the magical, science-fiction version, but the utterly commonplace.  The stuff of life that is so commonplace, in fact, it has receded below our collective conscious awareness. Working across film, animation, collage, photography, miniatures, and large-scale installation, her intent is to create a sense of wonder about those invisible, overlooked aspects of the everyday. The Criterion Collection recently hosted a retrospective of her documentary films.  Two of her bite-sized, animated series were commissioned by TED, and more are underway for a soon-to-launch network.  Recently, Jessica has poured her efforts into curating and running a museum devoted to the minuscule, the forgotten, & the discarded - an interactive manifestation of nostalgia.  Through the museum (the Office of Collecting and Design), Jessica presents various associated traveling exhibits, installations, and workshops around the US.
