CANICULA
ABOUT
In a small town in Veracruz, Canícula is the hottest time of the year. This film provides a series of moments: an awkward first dance, a lonely wash in a spring, the daily toil of bowl makers and some young men’s first “flight.” CANICULA displays a tireless curiosity, embodied in a roving and slyly self-aware camera, capturing the tension between tradition and the creeping forces of modernity. Beautifully photographed, this documentary features rare footage of the Totonac people's "voladores" ritual ("the flying dance"), named an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
