In the Waves
ABOUT
An expressive documentary that depicts the life of 80 year old Joan Mills in her aging coastal village. Following the death of her younger sister, Joan finds herself confronted by the fragility of life. Weaving intimate thoughts with lyrical imagery, In the Waves was crafted by Joan’s granddaughter Jacquelyn Mills. In essence, the film is an intergenerational love-letter, an ebb and flow between dream and reality, past and present, a glimpse of childhood and an encounter with the end-of-life.
Jacquelyn Mills creates healing films inspired by the natural world. Her current 16mm documentary “Geographies of Solitude” is supported by Sundance Documentary Fund. Her first documentary "In the Waves" premiered at Visions du Réel, was awarded Grand Jury Prize (NHIFF), Best Medium Length Documentary (RIDM), Best Documentary and Best Edit (FIN), and released at TIFF’s Lightbox Series. Jacquelyn has also worked as Director, DOP, Editor and Sound Designer on award-winning films for the NFB, Lisa Pictures, Grassfire Films and GreenGround Productions.
