PEACE OFFICER
ABOUT
PEACE OFFICER is a feature documentary about the increasingly militarized state of American police as told through the story of William “Dub” Lawrence, a former sheriff who established and trained his rural state’s first SWAT team only to see that same unit kill his son-in-law in a controversial standoff thirty years later.
Named to Variety's “10 Documakers to Watch” list in 2015, Brad Barber’s feature debut, PEACE OFFICER, which he directed, produced, and shot with Scott Christopherson, won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, among other festival honors. Peace Officer went on to a nationwide theatrical release, earning multiple Cinema Eye Honors distinctions before airing on PBS's Independent Lens. Previously, Barber was nominated for an Emmy as an editor on the HBO documentary RESOLVED (for which he also served as an associate producer and cinematographer) and was awarded 5 regional Emmys for his documentary shorts series BEEHIVE STORIES. Barber’s latest project is STATES OF AMERICA, which examines identity and connection to place through the lens of one person in each of the 50 United States--now streaming on PBS.org, the PBS app, and the WORLD Channel. He is a Professor of documentary film and married to artist and frequent collaborator Susan Krueger-Barber.
