Camden International Film Festival accepting submissions for Storyforms, an exhibition of VR and immersive nonfiction storytelling

May 25, 2017 [Camden, Maine] – The Camden International Film Festival (CIFF) is now accepting submissions of immersive nonfiction media for its exhibition, Storyforms: Remixing Reality. Launched in 2016 as part of the organization’s expansion into the Points North Institute, Storyforms showcases the work of innovative artists, filmmakers and journalists who are using new technologies and platforms to transform the ways nonfiction stories can be created and shared in the digital age. The deadline for submissions is June 30.

CIFF’s Storyforms program takes a broad view of the emerging media landscape, but focuses specifically on the implications of new developments for nonfiction storytellers — including documentarians and journalists. Projects accepted into the Storyforms exhibition may include VR, AR or mixed reality experiences, 360 video, art installations, sculptures, multimedia websites, data visualizations, mobile apps, social media series, games, bots, live performances, wearable devices, participatory media projects, or multi-platform documentaries.

“We’re looking for artistic work that elaborates upon John Grierson’s definition of documentary as the ‘creative treatment of actuality,’” says Program Director Sean Flynn. “It doesn’t have to be driven by a narrative, but there should be some attempt to represent reality in a novel or interesting way.”

The curators are also looking for projects that explore new processes for documentary and nonfiction media making, particularly those that transform the conventional relationships between artist, audience and subject. The fee for submissions is $35.
