The 21st edition of the Camden International Film Festival will take place throughout venues in Camden, Rockport, and Rockland, Maine from September 11-14, 2025.
A filmmaker-first festival, CIFF’s program celebrates the myriad of possibilities that nonfiction cinema has to offer. Our programming team cherishes the medium not only for its ability to connect audiences to the wider world through heartfelt stories, but also for the ways it engages with provocative questions through exciting and innovative forms. With each year’s slate of films, CIFF creates multiple entry points into the contemporary conversation about what nonfiction cinema can be.
We’re interested in films that tune into the sensory, radical, and tender. We value a diversity of approaches, and refer to these ideas while engaging with current cultural shifts, actively positioning CIFF as a place of interrogation and discovery. We’re unafraid to go out on a limb with you. We love to be surprised.
THE CAMDEN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Founded in 2005 and recognized as one of the top documentary film festivals in the world, the Camden International Film Festival (CIFF) gathers the world’s most boundary-pushing storytellers and industry leaders for a four-day celebration of non-fiction cinema.
CIFF is an experience just as unique as the films we exhibit. Hosted on the rugged coast of Maine, the Festival Weekend is packed with a hearty roster of filmmaker Q&As, interactive installations, and networking sessions – with plenty of opportunity for surprise and discovery. At CIFF, the emphasis is on building relationships – between filmmakers, industry, and audiences.
In CIFF’s program, you’ll find films, performances, and installations that move the documentary artform’s conversations two steps forward. We’re interested in films that are curious about cinema’s potential, engaged in urgent conversations, and rooted in the perspectives of thoughtful, unique creators.

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of films are you looking for?
CIFF is a filmmaker-first festival that seeks to celebrate the myriad possibilities of contemporary non-fiction cinema. Our programming team cherishes possibilities of the documentary form; its ability to connect audiences to the wider world through heartfelt stories, its urgency and nuance, and the ways it engages provocative questions through exciting forms.
We’re interested in films that tune into the sensory, radical, and tender. Conscious of the value of the diversity of approaches, we swim in the current shifts in culture, actively positioning CIFF as a place of interrogation and discovery. We’re looking for bold artists, unexpected themes, and radical reimaginings of well-tread stories. This is a festival for risk takers, heart warmers, and stories that are both, neither, and something new.
What about mid-length films?
CIFF considers mid-length films (those between 30-60 minutes) as short films. Please submit your mid-length project to our Short Film category.
My film’s not quite done yet – what should I do?
CIFF’s programming team will consider fine cuts of documentaries that are slated to be completed by July of 2025. If you decide to submit a fine cut of your film, please include a note on your post-production stage in the submissions summary.
What happens if my film premieres at another festival after I submit?
Films that premiere elsewhere after submission remain eligible for consideration in our general program, though they will no longer qualify for competition sections. Please notify us promptly of any premiere status changes through your submission platform.
Do you accept films that primarily use archival footage?
Yes. We welcome innovative approaches to archival material that push beyond traditional historical documentaries. Whether your film recontextualizes existing footage or weaves it into contemporary narratives, we’re interested in fresh perspectives on archival storytelling.
What is your policy on films using generative AI tools?
CIFF welcomes submissions that thoughtfully incorporate AI tools while maintaining artistic integrity. Films using generative AI must disclose this usage during submission. We evaluate these works based on their creative merit, ethical considerations, and overall contribution to documentary storytelling. For transparency, any substantial use of AI-generated content (images, voices, or text) must be clearly credited in the film.
