A Hawk as Big as a Horse
ABOUT
In a small Russian town on the edge of the forest lives Lydia, a queer ornithologist who is almost impossible to describe. In this dreamy collection of vignettes, we witness her attempts to express himself through a series of increasingly strange creative pursuits - whether filming a shot-for-shot remake of Twin Peaks, or a nature documentary about birds that look suspiciously like human elbows. As he attempts to make himself legible, her own perfectionism will either be her harshest enemy, or her most stringent ally.
Sasha Kulak is a multi-award winning director and cinematographer who's view focuses on the thin layers of reality invisible to the human eye. Born in Vitebsk, Belarus, her films have taken her to communities all over the world whether it be the Mexican mennonites ("Salamanca", 2015, 41’), an abandoned mining town in the USA ("Quicksilver Chronicles", 2019, 75’) or the Belarusian protests of 2020 ("Mara", 2022, 61’). Her latest film “A hawk as big as a horse”, 77’ made in collaboration with Arte La Lucarne, won a special mention at Dok Leipzig in 2022.
