BOMBAY BEACH
ABOUT
Bombay Beach was once the destination of choice for the rich and famous; a glitzy holiday playground on shores of the massive Salton Sea lake in southern California. That was way in the 50s and 60s. Since then, the lake has become ever more saline and the once-plush resort has fallen on times equally as hard as those of its present occupants.
Most famous for her award-winning films Bombay Beach and Honey Boy, Har’el creates narrative work that plunges deep into the heart of imagination and creates surreal, dream-like poetic meditations on life. Her wildly inventive approach to filmmaking produces genre-redefining work which is exceptional, fearless, and artistically blurs the line between documentary and fiction. In 2016, Har’el launched the initiative Free the Bid to address the gender imbalance among directors in the commercial industry. In 2019, Free the Bid became FREE THE WORK, dedicated to identifying systemic inequalities in film, television, advertising, and media and advocating on behalf of underrepresented creators. The FREE THE WORK database showcases the work of over 3,000 creators from all underrepresented identities in film, television, and advertising across 45 global territories.
