Incident In New Baghdad
ABOUT
In this provocative Oscar-nominated short documentary, one of the most notorious incidents of the Iraq War--the July 2007 slayings of two Reuters journalists and a number of other civilians by U.S. attack helicopters--is recounted in the powerful testimony of an American infantryman whose life was profoundly changed by his experiences on the scene.
Academy Award® nominee James Spione has been a documentary maker for more than two decades. His last feature, "Awake: A Dream from Standing Rock," detailed the dramatic year-long standoff between indigenous activists and North Dakota law enforcement. His previous film, the Emmy-nominated whistleblower documentary "Silenced," was broadcast around the world; both features were picked up by Netflix. In addition, Mr. Spione directed the powerful short "Incident in New Baghdad," nominated for an Oscar in 2012. Mr. Spione’s other nonfiction films include "American Farm," about his family’s homestead in upstate New York, as well as an ongoing series of short documentaries exploring the unique culture of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Spione has also made several fiction films; perhaps best-known is "Garden," starring Oscar®-winner Melissa Leo. His first film Prelude won a Student Academy Award and is currently being digitally restored by AMPAS for its Short Film Archive.
