ABOUT
Gena, a Russian drag artist and fashion student living in Moscow, leads a radical life. Faced with a government that criminalizes her, grandparents who show their love by pressuring her to assimilate, and private struggles with her identity, her strength is tested constantly. As her young life begins to take shape, Gena moves back and forth between Moscow and the small Russian town where her grandparents still live, seeking a place where she can live her purpose free from the risk of violence or arrest. Filmmaker Agniia Galdanova’s captivating portrait of this young artist and activist is as poised and provocative as the person at the film’s center. QUEENDOM will leave viewers reflecting on what it means to find yourself in a world with narrow margins for expression.
Agniia Galdanova is a Sundance and IDFA-supported documentary film director. Her previous film "One Step Forward, One Step Back" about a family’s dream to live far from civilization in the Altai Mountains premiered at the Message to Man International Film Festival.
