In SILENCED, Academy Award nominated documentarian James Spione investigates what really happened inside the USA security establishment after September 11th that caused it to radically change course in profound and lasting ways. Exploring the courage and character it takes to challenge unethical behavior from within the American national security state, the film offers a provocative critique of systemic failures of the U.S. government.

Academy Award® nominee James Spione has been a documentary maker for more than two decades. His last feature, "Awake: A Dream from Standing Rock," detailed the dramatic year-long standoff between indigenous activists and North Dakota law enforcement. His previous film, the Emmy-nominated whistleblower documentary "Silenced," was broadcast around the world; both features were picked up by Netflix. In addition, Mr. Spione directed the powerful short "Incident in New Baghdad," nominated for an Oscar in 2012. Mr. Spione’s other nonfiction films include "American Farm," about his family’s homestead in upstate New York, as well as an ongoing series of short documentaries exploring the unique culture of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Spione has also made several fiction films; perhaps best-known is "Garden," starring Oscar®-winner Melissa Leo. His first film Prelude won a Student Academy Award and is currently being digitally restored by AMPAS for its Short Film Archive.
