Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other

7:00pm SUNDAY 9.15, Journey's End

ABOUT

World-renowned photographer Joel Meyerowitz, 84, and his wife Maggie Barrett, 75, a talented yet less recognized writer, navigate the complexities of aging and artistic recognition. When Maggie slips and breaks her femur, Joel quickly transitions into a caregiver role, and their dynamic shifts, unearthing long-buried frustrations. The film delicately explores their three-decade partnership, revealing the delicate balance between individuality and togetherness. Through this film we witness the tender unraveling of a seemingly idyllic relationship, exposing both underlying tensions and enduring love.

Jacob Perlmutter is an award-winning street photographer and self-shooting film director with a BA Honors in Film Production from the Arts University College Bournemouth. In 2016, he developed his screenplay writing career at The Screen Arts Institute with a grant from the British Film Institute. His work includes over twenty music videos and several short films including 35mm French Exchange (2017), starring George MacKay, executive produced by Chris Columbus, Sandy Lieberson and Roger Pratt B.S.C. Fascinated by naturalism in scripted drama, this progression into documentary is a natural step to deepen his visual exploration of the human condition. Previous projects he both directed and DoP’d include Who is My Brother? (2020), San Francisco Love Story (2013) and El Musgo (2013). Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other is Jacob’s first step in documentary film.

Manon Ouimet is an Arts Council England-supported photographer and artist who has exhibited at the likes of the Saatchi Gallery and The Jewish Museum. She graduated from the University of West of England with a distinction Masters in Photography. Her accolades include the British Photography Award, the Feature Shoot Emerging Artist Award and the Monochrome Award. Her recent project My Name is Maya (2021) was long-listed for the Jerwood Photoworks Award. Over the past three years, compelled to explore themes of identity through moving image, she began producing and making films including Meet Me Where I Am (2020) and Stimming (a series of short films 2020). Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other marks Manon’s move into documentary film.
