Points North Fellowship

POINTS NORTH IMPACT

We believe that documentary is a powerful tool for bringing communities together, sparking dialogue and building movements for social change. Launched in 2013, Points North Impact is a series of programs that put these beliefs into action, bringing together filmmakers and Maine-based nonprofit leaders focused on a common issue to develop strategies for using nonfiction film and media as a tool for organizing and public engagement.

RECOVERY IN MAINE (2018-present)

Points North Institute has been partnering with the State of Maine, MaineHealth, Maine Behavioral Healthcare, and Camden National Bank to organize screenings and discussions across the region, using documentaries focusing on the opioid crisis. Each screening is free and open to the public, and a community conversation follows.

SUSTAINABLE MAINE (2015-2017)

Addressing the intersecting challenges (and opportunities) of climate change, ocean and land conservation, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy.

AGING IN MAINE (2013-2015)

Addressing how an aging demographic and issues like dementia-related illness impact Maine communities.

HEROIN(E)

Maine is one of the states hardest hit by the nation’s ongoing opioid crisis. Following a screening of Elaine Sheldon’s powerful short film HEROIN(E), we’ll bring together leaders from across Maine who are working on the frontlines of this epidemic, saving lives, raising awareness and developing new solutions.

ZERO WEEKS

American families are often forced to choose between tending to a spouse or parent with an unexpected medical emergency, or keeping their job and health insurance. Maine’s aging population makes the lack of paid leave a growing problem for families across the state. Join us for the World Premiere of Ky Dicken’s powerful film ZERO WEEKS, followed by a discussion with special guests about the scope of the problem here in Maine, and what can be done about it.
